Waimea Valley is a beautiful botanical garden south of Waimea Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. The visit there was among our most memorable stops.

The lily pads in this image were relatively small at about 18 inches. There were a few that were 3-4 feet across with a two inch upturned rim – like a giant upside down frisbee.

From the Polynesian Cultural Center, a way overpriced, over-hyped Mormon version of Pacific Culture. Nevertheless, it might be one of those places to see once.. Don’t waste your money on a guided tour.

The day ends with a show put on by a perky crowd of Mormon youth from Aukland to Salt Lake City. They attend the Oahu branch of BYU and work the Cultural Center for tuition. The guy in the middle looks just like Donny Osmond.

Taken at the Kailua Beach Park on Oahu’s southeastern shore. Every time I’ve seen a picture of tropical water this color, I’ve wondered if it was really that blue. It was.

Makapuu Point is the easternmost point on Oahu. The climb was gentle, but steadily uphill on an hot asphalt path. Worth the trek for the view.

This memorial at Pearl Harbor is more powerful than one might expect. It manages to convey, solemnity, grace and hope. At the same time it elicits unexpected intensity of emotion from the visitors.

At Jo-Jo’s Avenue Shaved Ice and Treats in Waiamea, Kuaui. It’s the only place I saw that referred to shaved rather than shave ice.

A former trash dump in WWII, this beach retained all the broken glass discarded there. The sand is comprised almost completely of small pieces ocean-washed glass

The Kauai Coffee Plantation’s product doesn’t compare to good Kona coffee, but the plantation is worth a quick stop. Just east of Point Allen, Kauai.

Waimea Canyon is spectacular. Well worth any amount of time you have to explore. Like the Grand Canyon, it’s vastness is difficult to convey in a photograph.

The weather wasn’t particularly cooperative at the top of the canyon. We waited for fog to clear, but this is about as good as it gets. Apparently this is one of the rainiest locations on the planet.

Another spectacular part of our Kauai visit was the sunset cruise from Port Allen to the Na Pali Coast and back. Na Pali Coast is where parts of Jurassic Park and the Faye Dunaway version of King Kong were filmed. Also another case of challenges to express in a photo.
