Just before I was about to pack up for the evening, came upon the candles and decided to wait and see who came along. The patience paid off, I think.

The Huntington Beach Pier at sunset. Okay, I’ll admit to moving the seagull slightly right and forward from its original position. Everything else is exactly where I found it.

Taken on a gorgeous evening while I was attending a two-day workshop in Monterey, CA. I was just getting into digital photography after years with film.

Cropped from a larger image. What’s wrong? Well… the third gull from the left is actually a satellite dish.

This one’s cropped and turned upside down. The rippling effect is from reflection off the waters of Monterey Harbor.

I came across this mother/daughter during a visit to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The wall is deep purple, the sweaters primary blue and red. Somehow the framing colors were appealing, but the b/w version tells the story I want to tell.

The Getty Museum’s architecture is as impressive as the collection. This image is a reflection of a travertine covered building. No filters, just cropped and flipped vertically to show only the water surface.

From early in my transition from film to digital, using a point-and-shoot three megapixel camera. This has way too much processing, but somehow the atmosphere in the chapel screamed for the overstated saturation and filtering. Then again, maybe it’s a case of “look what I can do with Photoshop.”

I was enamored by the artistic filters available in Photoshop. When I look back at the original image without the post-processing, I think it might have been just fine. What I really like is the unusual perspective on the statue of Father Serra from inside the ruins of the original mission chapel.

Salvation Mountain in Niland, CA near Salton Sea. Featured in the film, Into the Wild. It’s a wonderful, eerie, and, quite frankly, disturbing place. Apparently some desert loner has spent a good part of his life acquiring free latex paint and covering the earth. There’s no charge to visit, just a request to leave some paint. It’s unclear to me whether the creator is still working on this project.
