The posts below contain photos from my first outing with members of the San Diego DSLR group on March 13, 2010. This was one of the monthy group shoots. It was also the inauguration of my new Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro lens. First shots are encouraging. See for yourself. Each post contains:
- an image you can click to enlarge
- basic information and exif data (where available)
- a link to view or add comments – highly encouraged

Okay, so clearly I’m more versed in photography than in flower identification, which is pretty sad when you consider that every plant in this place was prominently labeled.

Here’s another case of not knowing what I’m photographing. But it’s a cool looking plant, whatever it is… and a good subject to learn a little about the new macro lens with.

Another case of not knowing what I’m photographing. In my old film days, I’d take a notebook and mark all the settings andnotes on the subject. In some respect, all the EXIF stuff makes me lazier.

Whatever this plant is, it’s the first shot with the macro that went more or less as I hoped/expected it would. I actually like this one quite a bit.

I took more than a handful of pictures of this organic, flora-covered statue with different focal points. They all needed more DOF. Might have been better to have the polarizing filter off in this flat light.

The water dripping off the head was from the hose trickling into her hair. I liked the line of the hose leading to the top of her head.

Here’s a wider view of the statue and the watering system. I presume it’s a temporary hose, but I think it added to the overall impression.

This is a case of learning to deal with the limits of a fixed length lens. The composition here is pretty much what came out of the camera without cropping.

This was the result of a attempt to be more aware of background. What looks like a simple angle took some time to create while making the yellow background consistent. Unfortunately, I missed on the lower left corner.

Again… no idea what this is. It was really quite small, but looked a lot like a pineapple blossom I photographed in Hawaii.

This is just a very small section of a huge succulent. A study in line more than content.

This is one of my favorites from the day. Not your typical subject, I was trying to convey the old and new together. I tried several aperture settings with more and less background focus. I think this f/4 setting worked best.

Spot-focused, hand-held. Pretty good detail under the circumstances. Still not seeing the degree of clarity in focus that I see in other photographers work online. Is it the lens? Camera movement? Sensor? I’m assuming there’s a gap in my technique. Getting better, but…

Just a shot for my beautiful Becky, who does some amazing mosaics for our yard. She’s done a turtle… the yard’s not big enough for anything larger.

I like the arrangement of the flowers and buds in this shot. Again, I’m wishing the focus was sharper on the younger blossom. Looks like the point of focus fell slight behind the primary subject.
